RAMY

                            RAMY: Humourous, Intriguing and Incredible.

Ramy Hassan is a first-generation Egyptian-American who is on a spiritual journey in his politically divided New Jersey neighborhood. He becomes caught between a Muslim community that thinks life is a moral test and a millennial generation that believes life has no consequences. Through it all, he's still trying to do the things that most 20-somethings do, like date. He is essentially a guy who is torn between praying on Fridays and going to parties on Friday nights. Which side will win out in this seemingly endless internal battle?

Ramy is an interesting tv show for its amazing concept, brilliant presentation and above all its humorous takes on the issues that are intricately woven into the lives of an average Muslim young adult. It was perhaps more inviting to finally have an Islam inspired tvshow that did not make the Muslims type-cast as victims of religious, ideological, socio-political segregation, but one which sought to explore the inner conflict that faces a Muslim in his or her everyday life, as he/she struggles to conform to religious doctrines and at the same time fit into the socio-cultural narrative of the society he finds himself.
The concept apart from being unique is also brilliant. The manner in which the conflict is set out with dark humour is just amazing. There was absolutely no need to do that, but it made it easier to appreciate the concept without having to be judgemental about the work of art. The plot of the show is quite simplistic if not even non-existent. But the fact of its being positioned around religious and social/cultural conflict meant that the show had adequate materials upon which it could continue rolling out contents for the entirety of the first season. Essentially, the plot of the show is self-generating and self-sustaining, and we just could not get enough out of it before the show ran it's course.
RAMY is much better appreciated by the young adults, the class who are most often faced with this choice or decision about religion and what type of Muslim they want to be, contrasted with the type they are and the type they ought to be. It's an interesting journey as the audience explores the life choices of the titular character and the outward reactions of the society to those choices. You couldn't have asked for a better way to be guided on the doctrines of Islam without needing to be judged or having the condescending glare of the uninitiated focused on you. The subtle humour takes away the edge while placing a spotlight on very important principles of the religion that are so easily departed from and why that is so.

The beauty of the show is also much appreciated due to its relativity and the realism of the concept. There is nothing presented as a concept idea that most young adults ( Muslims or otherwise) have not contemplated or been involved in, and so the show is quite easy to get into, easy to follow and comprehend due to simplicity of narration.
We cannot talk about the beauty of this show without mentioning the beautiful performance of the cast who have brought the magnificent script to our screens. Ramy (Ramy Youssef) performed admirably well under the pressure of creating and directing the show, and he needs commending. Mohammed Amer, Hiam Abbass, Amr Waked did incredible job on screen to warrant an above average character review.
In all, it's a wonderful show with a lot of humour ingrained in it, but this is a show you must absolutely see for its "Muslim - Arabian" narrative. It's just so good to see the portrayal of the beauty of the religion and the interaction of the tenets of the religion with the socio-cultural elements that come into play. It's a must watch for all audience type, whether of the Islamic Faith or not. It's concept is just so good it can keep you intrigued from the premiere to the finale.
