THE ORDER

The Order: Netflix Misfires Big Time!!!!

Out to avenge his mother's death, a college student pledges a secret order and lands in a war between werewolves and practitioners of dark magic.
The Order was supposed to represent Netflix TV dominance, it was supposed to be a tv show that redefined a genre that has become so cliché, people practically stayed away from it, A magic/ werewolf tv genre.
The concept of the show albeit quite simple offered a unique opportunity for Netflix to weave an intricate tale, with proper character and conflict development as well as ensuring that there was adequate plot depth to keep viewers interested in the show. Surprising enough, Netflix failed woefully on all grounds and then some.
That being said, let's begin with the concept itself. It was nice, Creative and ingenious to have a lead character who sought vengeance against a known villain, and would do anything to acquire the power required to do just that. It offered Netflix the opportunity to spin an intricate tale that puts the hero through various trials capable of questioning his commitment to the cause, and again Netflix failed abysmally. Netflix told a one directional story with hardly any plot diversion or conflict diversifications. Everything was straight as a road without bends.

The conflict was even yet more abysmal. As is usually the case with high end Tvseries, the conflict element is usually derived from the surrounding circumstances which the characters progressively encounter as the series progressed, meaning that it is highly unusual for a tv show to tell a tale in which the conflict had already been set in stone and expect a high success rate. Netflix did the unthinkable with this show by setting the conflict down in stone and letting the characters come upon it, rather than have it done the other way. Edward Coventry was already pinpointed as the villain even before we got to meet him, how then can his reveal be intriguing? How can his defeat be iconic? It was just the absolute worst move Netflix ever pulled off, and it failed in the most abysmal of fashion.
Plot depth was absent. The show hardly went beyond the surface to explore the underlying conflict between Magic Practitioners and Werewolves( The Knights of Saint Christopher). The show failed to explore the root cause of the hero's vendetta against the villain, and this to me is the series' biggest fail. It just was not enough to say "Edward Coventry is the reason my daughter is dead". We know there was a lot that happened even before she died, because even in her death she still professed her love for Coventry through the Necraphone. Perhaps, three or two episodes could have been used to explore the life and times of Coventry and The Jack's mother, moreso as he had conveniently found himself able to enter the memories of everyone. That was a waste since they never explored the unknown, leaving the series to end on a dead rubber note.
The character cast was also nondescript. Netflix failed in achieving what it had been so successful with over the years, in casting the right persons for roles. The performance of the entire cast was poor, none of them stood out in any material particular. Even the villain that was supposed to be an enigma never truly lived up to expectations, and accordingly the show failed to deliver on thrills and on screen perfection.

On the whole, the series was supposed to come off as a dark magical tale, what I ended up watching was a high school magic exhibition. Disappointing! Please the Visual Effect is an absolute washout, it's a travesty and every time I saw the werewolves (which they tried so hard to avoid showing) it was always poor and surely lowly budgeted! It was despicable to say the least.
From us here at FCA, this is one of the shows Netflix must definitely avoid renewing for a second season. We don't need such series bringing down the pedigree of the company and we certainly won't be recommending this show to any of our readers...unless you have some free time and data to your hands.
