RUSSIAN DOLL

Russian Doll: Netflix Emerges with Diamonds from a Gold Mine!!

Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne stars in this comedy-drama series as Nadia, a young woman who is on a journey to be the guest of honor at a party in New York City. But she gets caught in a mysterious loop as she repeatedly attends the same event and dies at the end of the night each time, only to awaken the next day unharmed as if nothing had happened.
Netflix has done the unthinkable with this show, by not only picking a very difficult concept and making it work, but repeating a concept they had already run with sometime back in 2017 with Naked.
The concept even though lacks originality, having been deployed with a 2017 Netflix Original movie, Naked, Natasha Lyonne totally made this worth the watch and certainly brought with it a dimension to the narrative that was missing from the 2017 movie.
As for plot, the show started off as though it lacked one, but apparently the plot was ingrained much deeper within the concept than expected, and as soon as the entire show started coming together, it stopped being a comedy drama, and started being a show with a moral message, which to me is a very good way to captivate audience and ensure that in as much as we are having a good laugh, we are also getting a taste of consequences of life choices, albeit presented in the most unlikeliest of fashions.

I must mention that the show definitely lacks plot depth, but that counts for very little when you consider the brilliance of the scripting and the acting class and mastery of Natasha Lyonne. I think the flamboyance of the lead character made the show sparkle and blitz through the first season, there was never a dull moment with Natasha on screen. Her zeal, dialogue / monologue mastery was astonishing, her facial expressions and body language truly portrayed the character she represented. It's not a surprise she is an Emmy Award Nominee, and honestly, it won't be a surprise if she bags another for her abnormally astute performance in Russian doll.
The conflict situation itself is quite complex and maybe come off a little boring for suffering from a lot of repetitiveness, but the show totally handled that aspect as best as possible. The conflict resolution was an even more magnificent affair, it's the type of finale that can get you emotional and make you want to watch the scene over and over again, which certainly is the whole intendment. At the risk of spoilers, the conflict is centred around the repetitive deaths of Nadia and her journey to discovering it's cause and ultimately stopping it's occurrence. What is more strange, she is not alone in this. It's crazy, it's thought provoking and it sends a very simple, yet important message; the power of help.

From us here at FCA, it's a certain recommend, most especially as it's a show you can pick and have run with at the slightest given time and space. It's a first season of 8 episodes and 27 minutes of run time. 8 episodes stacked with content, incredible acting and amazing scripting. Kindly pick this and have fun with it.
