Iron Fist: Netflix's Series of Unfortunate Unexplained Glowing Fists
The 2nd season of Netflix's much talked about Iron Fist from Marvel continued the story of Danny Rand as the Immortal Iron Fist, former student of K'un-Lun, and the ultimate conqueror of Shau-lao the undying, in his quest to step up and become the protector of New York after the events of Marvel's The Defenders, and the notable void left by the absence of Daredevil; Matt Murduck. The show saw the return of familiar faces in the form of Danny Rand(Finn Jones), Colleen Wing(Jessica Henwick), Ward Meachum( Tom Pelphrey), Davos(Sacha Dhawan), Misty Knight (Simmone Missick), Joy Meachum (Jessica Stroup) and the new face of Mary Walker (Alice Eve).
The 2nd season of Iron Fist was expected to be a much better version of the first season with much better villains, conflicts and character developments. The 2nd season is however a much worse rendition of the story of the Iron Fist than the 1st season could ever have been.
The failings of the season started right off the bat with the decision of the creative team to go with Davos as the villain of the 2nd season. It didn't make for a good narrative, neither did it give audience anything spectacular to look forward to. Viewers were capable of deducing that the show would end the way it did without any reasonable thrilling conflict or combat. Moreover, there was no bloodlust to the combat scenes as the villain and the protagonist were basically brothers. We were unimpressed.
The season further made the mistake of making the iron first transferable without anything offered in the way of explanations, thereby creating a series of Unfortunate Unexplained Glowing Fists. What was supposed to be a legend and the height of martial artistry turned out to be gloves that could be worn by just anybody( really? Colleen?). The series was so drab that the only shinning light was the appearance of Detective Misty Knight (Missick). As usual, her on screen performances were great, her carriage perfect and her inter character relations ( dialogues) were brilliant.
The introduction of Mary Walker(Alice) perhaps offered yet more positives for the show, as her character is capable of yet more development and even more compelling conflict, if and when the show runners decided to make her the lead villain.
Returning yet again to the script, it was poor, it was abysmal and it didn't offer the spices required of a marvel superhero show. The character choice for the seasons villains was totally not relatable. Davos didn't offer up what a marvel villain ought to possess. He didn't have the strength of Bushmaster and Diamond Back, neither did he have the villainous personality of Kilgrave or Kingpin. The character of Davos even though not conflicted, also didn't offer up much in the way of relatability, strength, charisma and / or ruthlessness. In fact, if we may be allowed to say, he felt like a joke for most parts of the show....most especially after the ridiculous Big reveal of stealing the iron Fist from Danny Rand. We could immediately conclude that he won't hold it for long.
Poor story, poor conflict, a worthless excuse of a villain, lack of character depth. In fact this season had absolutely nothing going for it in terms of creativity. I was even more amused when the iron first became Busoshouku Haki from One Piece (anime) in the final scenes of the season when we saw it being used to wield weapons; first, the katana(by colleen) and then the pistols (by Danny). And all of a sudden the mystifying aspect of the iron Fist had been demystified with not one but two idiots running around the streets with Glowing Fists. Ridiculous. Why not take more time to develop to that point!? It wouldn't hurt the show, it'd most likely work to its advantage.
Overall a poor show. We are however hopeful that the creative team can do wonders with the character of Mary Walker. She could make for the best Marvel Netflix villain yet. It would make for a good narrative. I couldn't have been any happier with the work done on building this character. The choice of actor is simply superb. Her(Alice's) ability to swap between her personas (Mary and Walker) is simply brilliant.
Whereas the show has failed in developing the character of the iron Fist and that of Davos, it has inadvertently expended a lot of effort in developing the character of the show's future in Mary Walker.
On a lighter note, maybe we could consider season two as the character development of Mary Walker as we build towards a must be massive 3rd season.
It's the only thing capable of saving the show; a monster 3rd.
