Good Girls : A Little Too Close To Home?
When sisters Beth and Annie and their best friend Ruby become fed up with playing by the rules and not getting the respect they deserve, they band together to take control of their lives -- by holding up a local grocery store. Beth's the perfect wife and mother, but her used-car-dealing, cheating husband has sent her family into financial ruin; Ruby is happily married to a policeman but can't afford the medical bills and experimental drugs to help her daughter; and Annie, a single mom, is caught in a nasty custody battle with her ex. In desperate need of money, the women plan the heist expecting to ease their financial burdens. But new to the game of crime, they get pulled in deeper than they ever imagined -- and the only way out of this will be together.
Good Girls is a good story( albeit looking familiar) told from the perspective of three upright citizens of society who have become fed up with the regular way of doing things and getting nothing positive in return. The story was put together in a very good way and presented in an even better fashion. Whereas we felt that the show was a little too close to home, with its similarities to AMC's Breaking Bad, we however felt that this one was even put in a much more realistic light. The show presented a societal conundrum as well as how certain people choose to deal with such problems. In this series, the protagonists( if we may refer to them as such) choose the often condemned choice of breaking the law to achieve the desired ends and we liked the approach.
The plot theme element seemed quite simple from the season premier, however with the progress of the show, it started becoming complex, with the introduction of Rio(Manny Montana) who unknown to them owned the money they had stolen. This essentially caused their action to boomerang on the team, and who do they have to turn to for help? No one!
The mere fact that they had no experienced person to turn to for help meant that we were treated to 45 minutes of amateurish scheming, and we couldn't have asked for better. Sincerely, a lot of people have become tired of professional planning, and we very much loved the home made plans of getting out of serious jams. This was one thing that viewers most definitely loved, the homely atmosphere of the show, and the always hilarious conclusion by the team that the best way to get out of the jam was go engage in much more mischief. It's hilarious!
Let us do a quick section on the acting, Ruby Hill (Retta) is a good actor, she didn't have to act the nasty black Lady, she presented a composed, well articulated and built character depiction which is quite different from your run of the mill black character. Her communication skills are also top notch and we relate very much to her character and the need to engage in the nefarious acts that they undertook to do.
Beth Boland (Christina Hendricks ) on the other is a character that even though possessed good acting skills, the script just didn't favour. It was very hard to relate with her character and her quickness to turn to the dark side of life. For one, why did she drag the team back into the dark after seemingly clearing the hurdle unscathed? No matter the angle I look at this from, I still don't seem to get it. Good actor, poor script, we rate her average!
Annie Marks (Mae Whitman) is perhaps the character with the best script. She not only performed exceptionally well with the script, and character depiction, but we must mention that her witty comments and sarcastic suggestion added a whole lot of positive vibe and appeal to the show. She perhaps has the biggest impact on the show, and she is one actor I will definitely look forward to seeing on TV from now on.
Rio( Manny Montana) reminds me of Shades Alvarez from Luke Cage, their depiction of character or rather their character build do not scream; "notice me" , rather it's a cool, calm presentation of sinister mien capable of stunning even the most cold blooded of persons. We liked his character and how he is able to change rapidly from being the homely Gangster willing to guide and mentor, to the no nonsense business man who has no accommodation for failure. Brilliant!
The remainder of the cast can be rated below average, and we won't care in the least bit, because they had practically no impact on the overall outlook of the show.
Summarily, we have a good tvshow here on our hands with striking similarities to our Award Winning Breaking Bad, presented in very different light, different, changing and dynamic conflict scenarios. Good characters with solid script, not-so- rivetting presentation of conflict and a not so surprising conclusion to the conflict, but at least we can say "them copy am well" .
In my own personal views, I think it's a good show, they have copied the idea and adapted it to suit their needs well. It's a good business bargain and they returns on the investment is paying dividends as evidenced from viewership and ratings. I honestly do not think it's a bad idea to 'borrows' ideas of hit TV shows and present them in different and much more dynamic ways.
All in all, great show.
Definitely recommended to our readers, you won't regret this one, in fact you owe us a lot thanks for recommending this to you. Don't worry we don't take bank drafts, we are good like that.
Retta....Ruby Hill
Christina Hendricks....(Beth Boland)
Mae Withman....( Annie Marks)
Manny Montana.....(Rio)
FCA's AppR : 7.9/10
Don't worry, definitely the rating of the show had to drop for unoriginality!!
