MET GALA 2018: A NIGHT WITH THE HEAVENLY BODIES AND WHAT THEY WORE

Every year, social media goes agog on the night of the MET GALA and you may be wondering what the hullabaloo is all about.

Hold your tits; it will all be unravelled in a bit.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City holds an annual fundraising gala which marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute annual fashion exhibit. The event usually takes place on the first Monday in May and is an exclusive social event which has the Crème de la crème of arts, fashion, high society, film and music in attendance. Each year’s event usually has a theme for the Costume Institute’s exhibition, and the theme sets the tone for what the guests are expected to wear for the night.

Sometimes, the theme is a bit confusing on its stylistic directives and may be more challenging to one gender than the other.

lool!!!!! look at how ordinary these men are looking even though there's a theme for the night. Same 2015 MET gala.

The Theme for the 2018 MET Gala was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
Pope Francis

It would be noteworthy to include here that The Catholic Church, lent more than forty papal vestments from the Vatican, and a Cardinal-Timothy .M. Dolan, was in attendance.

Cardinal Dolan, Donatella Versace and others

Are you more Catholic than the pope?

A WALK THROUGH SOME OF THE LOOKS AND SOME BLUNDERS

As always with the Met Gala, we had our sights set on the Queen who adheres to all the instructions of the gala and even does ‘jara’ (A Nigerian colloquialism meaning “to put in extra efforts and exceed the standard”. We were sure she wouldn’t disappoint us this year and you know what, she didn’t. We also expected some looks bound to stir controversy and a lot of frothing in the mouth.
A rare picture of the first female....ooops!!!

SHE TOOK NO PRISONERS
All hail Robyn Fenty XIV

Rihanna showed up for the MET in a showstopping jewel-encrusted gown by Maison Margiela and paired it an actual mitre which it is said she borrowed from Cardinal Dolan. She was the undisputed queen of the night. As she has always been.

Girrrrrrrrrl!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another look which I found particularly interesting for the night was that of music trio-Migos.

The music trio became famous with their song "Versace", so I guess its only right that they came to the MET Gala donned in a bright sequined Versace suit. The Jacket had patterns which I can describe as very "Nigerian Catholicky". It reminded me of the Christian Mothers fabric which our Catholic Mothers wear on Mothers day.

Another Catholic vibe I got from the Migos look was a reminder of this fabric that was prevalent among a lot of Catholics when the late Pope John Paul II visited Nigeria for the beatification of Blessed Iwene Tansi.

So, in a way, they still stuck to the theme of the night. We also have to bear in mind that Versace sometimes designs their fabrics as a way of paying homage to Italy and its predominantly catholic faith.

This walk would be incomplete without mentioning Lily Collins

Lily was draped in an all black Givenchy gown and looked sooo heavenly. Her makeup was also not left out of the theme.

Her makeup artist Fiona Stiles, acknowledged that she drew inspiration from the occult and dark arts for this look. According to her, her deep history of Arts inspired the look and also because she wanted something different from the norm and knowing Lily as a risk taker, she was happy to be on board.

Honourable Mentions

Cara Delevingne in Dior

Janelle Monae in Marc Jacobs looking like a very sophisticated Nun

Solange in Iris Van Herpen. She and Janelle can totally have it anytime

Cardi B really embodied the theme and I loooove it. She's wearing a dress designed by Moschino

Sza being an angel in Versace

Madonna donned in Jean Paul Gaultier

Kate Bosworth in Oscar de la Renta
Lena Waithe looking like a rainbow in Carolina Herrera

Zoe Kravitz in Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent. I don't know what theme she was going for but I love her, so it's a yes for me. :))))

Zendaya in Versace, giving off Joan of Arc vibes

Jennifer Connerly

Stella Maxwell in Moschino. I'm reminded of the Nigerian Catholic Vibe which Migos gave off

Tessa Thompson giving off Sultry nun vibes

Nkiru Minaj in Oscar de la Renta

It may seem like I'm being biased by including a lot of women, but truth be told, I was pissed at the men. They had it very easy. I could not understand the need for tuxedos. They could easily have worn modified versions of the cassocks/soutanes and added a mitre or a zuchetto like Rihanna did.
 What I expected-A zucchetto

Anyway, some of the men came through and I'm grateful for that.

Alessandro Michelle, Lana Del Ray and Jared Leto came to take away my sins

Jared Leto-Best Dressed Male

Chadwick Boseman did not come to play.

Darren Criss

Trevor Noah

Pharrell Williams

I'm so confused because I keep trying to figure out the look he was going for.

Daniel Kaluuya- looking like a church-warden( still in line with the theme, I guess)

Donald Glover- This is Amer..(not the theme)

Michael B. Jordan -Dear Killmonger, I was going to say this is why you died, you don't keep to instructions. But this looks like a modified cassock, so it's a win.
