Down to it over the years I came across alot of people who when talking about the man In black refer to him as their favourite superhero and that got me thinking which is the reason for this article. Is he a super hero or a VIgilante or both. In answering this question let's first of all refer to the dictionary and get the meaning of the words super hero and VIgilante and then bring them in context to the batman as we know him.
Who is a hero? According to dictionary.com a hero is a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character.
A super hero according to Cambridge dictionary is defined as a benevolent fictional character / hero having extraordinary or super human powers.
Finally a VIgilante is a person who tries in an unofficial way to prevent crime,or to catch and punish someone who has committed a crime especially because they do not think that the official organisations such as the police are fighting or controlling crime effectively .
I could go on and on supplying definitions and quotes but I rather not because that would turn my write up on one of my favorite action figure into an academic exercise and bore a whole lot of people, which is not the plan as this is just a write up on one of the most popular comic and movie characters.
From the definitions above we see that the batman as we know him suits all the attributes as contained in the definition of a vigilante Which is not really a suprise as that's who he is the bat of Gotham.
But back to the question, to answer it we have to consider a whole lot of things and scenarios which will help us in arriving at a definite answer .
First we look at the childhood of Bruce Wayne who we see as the only child of the billionaire couple the 'Wayne's ' fast forward to the defining moment of his life the mugging of his parents gone wrong which led to their death right in front of Little Bruce and that moment changed his life and sent him on the journey that culminated in him becoming the batman .
Again still looking at that moment we come to realize that the killer of his parents was never apprehended by the police .
From all this we see Bruce Wayne go on a long journey, undergo a whole lot of change and training and which prepares him to become the bat of Gotham.
He becomes a VIgilante whose work is to do what the authorities won't and can't do, he dishes out justice to those who deserves it and bring justice to those the authorities can't help. He seeks to put fear in the mind of the villains which is his persona .
Yeah and again batman kills, for instances look at dawn of justice and the recent batman comics, batman is a VIgilante simply put batman operates in the shadows, he does not care for the love of the public, or adoration of the city, he has no code or whatsoever all he cares about is getting the job done and nothing else.
Let's not forget batman has no super powers he is just a regular guy who wants the society to be rid of bad guys and he goes on his own personal crusade to get this done, he can be killed literally, batman without props is just another Spoilt millionaire does that sound familiar, yes it does Oliver queen popularly known as the green arrow and we all agree that he is a VIgilante I guess that settles it then our bat of Gotham is not a superhero yes he is a hero but he is more of a vigilante than any other thing notice he is different from the rest of the justice league. Avert your mind to the dialogue between Barry Allen and Bruce Wayne where the flash ask him yes what is your super power and the batman simply smiles and replies ' I am rich ' end of story. Let's just leave it here or no one last point even the major villain in the bat man universe one of the most divisive villains in all of the comic world the joker who is different from any other villain we have come across he really shows that Mehn the batman is really different from any other action figure we know. Now down to weekly Gossip it's rumoured that Ben Affleck won't continue as the bat man as the directors want to go younger but then we have a new batman movie slated for later this year only time will tell. I hope it leaves up to the standard of the Dark Knight which is still the best movie from the d. C universe
