Dark: A Netflix Original Masterpiece:
Two children go missing in the German town of Winden, four families with dark secrets exposed as the frenetic search for the children rages on. The History of the town, three dates in history, 1953, 1986 and 2019; a repeat of what transpired in the past, or are they all connected? Who are these curious characters, what is their connection to the town? Are they a part of the events that shaped the future of the town, or are they the future that influenced the history of this small town?
Dark is a brilliant presentation of storytelling. It's another Netflix masterpiece. It's exquisite in every aspect. Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese have outdone themselves with this one.
The very first two episodes definitely will remind you of "Stranger Things" , but alas, this is a whole new level of thriller/ Mystery. What makes the show so good is the fact that it keeps you guessing, right till the final episode. The acting is top notch, the character ensemble even though German, and relatively unknown to many, were absolutely brilliant.
The show is in German, if you are lucky, you may find a subtitled version, or you may find an English dubbed version, but believe me, whichever version you get, you are absolutely going to get more value for your money than you ever thought possible.
Okay, spoiler alert!!! Don't go beyond this point if you are not prepared!
I'll revisit the point of this review, what makes this tvshow so good? Is it the storytelling? Is it the acting? Or is it the inherent Mystery woven into the show? To answer in the affirmative to one of the above options will be to do a great disservice to the show. In every category mentioned above, the series delivered in aces. But have Netflix ever failed at storytelling? Perhaps not.
The show throws in your face a mystery to solve from the very first episode, a child has gone missing days before, there is no clue as to his whereabouts, is he dead? Is he alive? Did he run away or was he kidnapped, who, in such a small town could have perpetrated such a heinous crime? This is what the theme for the show seemed to be, until "poof" another child goes missing... except he is not missing, there he is emerging from whence he was lost, but no? No one seems to know him, his house is not his house anymore, Alas, he was lost but found, in 1986! At the same time, a boy is found dead in 2019, could this be Mads Nielson who went missing in 1986?
From there on, it's clock work in your head, trying to keep up with the events from 1953, 1986 and 2019. Is the present the past or is it the future? Is the future the present or is the past the present and the present the future? Which of the three dates in history influences the course of the town's history?
Could one of these characters from 2019 have set the events in motion in 1953? Or could one of the missing boys have grown into a man in the same town? Could yet another of the town's inhabitants have travelled from 2052?
This tvshow is breathtaking, and every idea is introduced at the exact perfect time. It's a must watch tvshow for connoisseurs of good TV, it's definitely worth your every naira and kobo!
Louis Hoffman, Maja Schone, JordisTriebel, Mark Wascke. Names I will certainly look forward to seeing anytime soon.
