An autistic young surgeon named Shawn Murphy who has savant syndrome relocates from a small town to practice as a surgeon in the prestigious San Jose st Bonaventure hospital under the tutelage of his mentor Dr. Aaron glassman. Having survived a very rocky and troubled childhood, the odds are stacked against him as he is alone in this world and unable to connect with people around him but he finds his niche in his extraordinary medical skills and he labours to change the perception about him.
Episode 18 into the second season and the show is still going strong actually it's getting a whole lot better and thats alot considering that the first season was quite good. Let me get this out already Freddie highmore has been brilliant we will still come back to this point later in this review.
I dont like medical drama because they all always seem like the same thing just a change of cast, so it was quite surprising to stumble upon the good doctor and see the new spin they were placing on their own story. ABC really did hit a good one here and they milking all they can out of it.
It's the basic medical drama plot, the happenings in the or, the hospital boardroom politics, the personal lives of the staffs of the hospitals, but then the story of the protagonist having autism is quite novel and not one that has been explored before though. Looking at the show now and where it was at the end of the first season it's really hard not to give props to the creative team behind the scripts and plot development.
The story keeps on evolving, adding a lot of new characters along the way but still not deviating away from the original story of the show. So far there has been so many twist and suprises I honestly never saw coming, is it Dr.glassman being diagnosed of cancer and his struggle with it so far or Shawn love life not panning out like we expected, that was really a sucker punch .
There has been so many twist in the show and at this point I can't even rule out any possibility, the latest being dr.shawn transferred from surgery to pathology, wow I literally almost dropped my phone when streaming that episode no one saw that.
Medical dramas are almost very easy to predict but that has not been the case so far in this very show, the series has so much plot twist and suprises built into it.
And then talking about the pacing of the show, the show is not really fast or slow paced it just goes the way the idea in an episode or a particular arch will best be achieved and conveyed to the audience properly and this is really recommendable.
Now let's roll out the drums for Freddie highmore ,it's been a pleasure watching him get into his own element in this role of an autistic brilliant young man. It just feels so good watching him deliver on his potential in this show and the nominations have been coming and they are not stopping anytime soon at all. He has been the bright light that has kept the house shining even when all others have deemed and it's quite impressive considering the names in this show, alot of them are very recognisable names in the industry and yet Freddie highmore has been absolutely head and heels above every other person. The portrayal of his character almost had people wondering whether he has had first hand experience about the condition in his personal life.
One thing that is noticeable in ABC series is the ethnic diversity in the cast and it's so noticeable in this very show can't say if its a bad or good thing though really undecided on that.
The show also tackles certain topics such as racism, and how much it plays a role in qualified people getting jobs, it's really annoying when you hear that a hospital has to have a certain percentage of all races so as not to appear racist what happens to employing the most qualified person for the job but this is currently where we are In society, the need to look correct rather than to be actually correct. We can do better.
Now talking about the not so great things in this show, it's way too long currently it's 18 episodes into the second season and it does not look like concluding yet. Reduce the number of episodes.
Also medical dramas alot of times do not really depict what's obtainable in a hospital, they always paint this image and idea that is far removed from the truth and it can really be annoying and just like alot of shows ,this series falls into the same trap and I hope one day we do get a medical drama that can be really real and refreshingly original.
