FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD

As most Potterhead/movie fans are aware, there is a new movie set in J.K Rowling's wizarding world which would be out in November. The movie is a part of the The Fantastic Beast Series, which is a spin-off prequel of five films, showing the backstory of some events and characters in the Harry Potter Universe.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the sequel to Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, is the second installment in the series of five films which makes up the Fantastic Beasts Series.

The Plot

At the end of the first film, the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald's plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Brief Recap of the Trailer

The trailer opens and we see a familiar setting-Hogwarts- with a young Dumbledore(Jude Law) in a classroom teaching the Defence Against the Dark Arts. The students are learning how to defeat a Boggart-a magical creature that takes the form of your worst fear. The spell which defeats this creature is known as "RIDDIKULUS". The young Newt Scamander steps before the creature and it is revealed that his fear is having to work in an office behind a desk. This shows that Newt has a bit of an independent streak and loves adventure, not minding the dangers ahead. We also see Gellert Grindelwald before what appears to be the Wizengamot(the council of the most respected wizards). Nicholas Flamel, the famous alchemist and founder of the Philosopher's stone is being spoken to by Newt, perhaps, on the orders of Dumbledore, to help take down Grindelwald. The most pertinent part of the trailer to note is when Dumbledore tells Newt  that he (Dumbledore) cannot move against Grindelward, so it has to be him (Newt).

Firstly:Who is Gellert Grindelwald

Casting our minds back to the first Harry Potter book (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone), the name Gellert Grindelwald is seen on the back of a chocolate Frog card about Dumbledore. It was stated on the card that Dumbledore was particularly famous for the defeat of the dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald. His name is not mentioned again until the last book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when the infamous Daily Prophet writer, Rita Skeeter published "The life and lies of Albus Dumbledore"; which she wrote after the death of Dumbledore.
Grindelwald was referred to as the "darkest wizard in existence second only to Voldemort". He attended the "Durmstrang Institute" which is the Scandinavian equivalent to Hogwarts. And as at the time he was in school, he was already heavily invested in learning about the dark arts before he got expelled at 16.

Rita also extensively wrote on the friendship of Dumbledore and Grindelwald whom Dumbledore had met after the death of his mother and while he was going through a rough patch.
He immediately took to Grindelwald and as that time, Grindelwald had begun looking for the Deathly Hallows-the elder wand, the resurrection stone and the cloak of invisibilty- and Dumbledore became interested because he wanted to resurrect his parents.
It should be instructive to note that this was a completely different Dumbledore who felt desolate because he had to abandon his hopes and dreams to look after his younger siblings because his mother had passed on and so, he was quite reckless at the time, compared to the Dumbledore who everyone loved and trusted later.

Grindelwald's friendship with Dumbledore however came to an end when Aberforth( Dumbledore's brother), confronted them about their plans to conquer the world whilst dragging their frail sister (Ariana) along and a fight ensued amongst the trio. While dueling, someone's wand sent off a spell which killed Ariana and Dumbledore blamed himself ever since.

Expectations from Fantastic Beats: The Crimes of Grindelwald And The Series In General

According to J.K Rowling, the series span over a period of 19 years which means it would likely end in 1945, the year Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in the duel. Fantastic Beasts takes place in 1926 so, it is very unlikely that we would be given an insight into the life of the rebellious Dumbledore or his friendship with Grindelwald. The only possible way would be if another series was dedicated fully to those dark years in Dumbledore's life. This movie would entirely be focused on Grindelwald's sojourn and rise as a dark wizard some years after his fall out with Dumbledore.

Also, in the trailer, we see witches/wizards apparating inside Hogwarts and you will recall that Hermione always chided Harry and Ron that it was not possible to apparate and disapparate out of Hogwarts. The one time it happened was when the sixth years were being taught apparition and the Headmaster lifted the ban for only one hour. The other time it happened was when the Death eaters and Voldermort seized the school. The likely explanation would either be that this is a plot hole or that Fantastic Beasts happened at an earlier time when the rules were different.

Finally, we can surmise from the trailer that Dumbledore is not set to move against Grindelwald yet because of the love they once had as he probably has not forgiven himself for his sister's death and the fact that he allowed himself to be exploited.
