Forbidden : A Little Too Predictable From Africa Magic or A Slow Burner?
The Premier of Forbidden treated viewers to the relationship between Enitan Olanipekun and Demilade Doregos who are both employees of A.D.& C. The relationship is one which is kept secret as it is against company policy. All is not however smooth sailing as we are exposed to a dark secret that Demilade Doregos is hiding, another affair, unknown to both his girlfriend, or his Family, one that could be potentially damaging, not only to his relationship, but to his reputation.
The show however does not revolve only around the Triangle of love and deceit of Demilade, Enitan and Becky, it’s a wholesome Family drama, with The Doregos, the influence ,the power and the secret of the household; the very well kept secret of the Olanipekuns, the everyday trials and tribulations of the BraithwaiteS, Timi's obsession with Enitan and Becky's incessant scheming.
The first episode of Forbidden promised a five star show, with a well recognised character ensemble, we couldn’t have asked for a better TV show to replace the irreplaceable Battleground on Africa Magic Showcase.
With the show casting:
Demilade Doregos:Kunle Remi
Enitan:Theresa Edem-Isemin
Dame Eboh Doregos:Tina Mba
Becky:Toni Tones
Timi Braithwate:Charles Etutebi
Mr Braithwaite:Sola Fosudo
Doyin Doregos: Bukola Oladipupo
Derin Doregos:Pearl Okorie
Nana:Moyinoluwa Olutayo
Jide Rambo:Mofeyitoluwa Jebutu
Lily:Nengi Adoki
Vincent:Malcom Obinna Ifediora
Madu: Kalu Ikeagwu.
We were sure to get Stellar performance with acting, dialogues and character emotional perfection. What we however did not expect was a mismanagement of ideas. The storyline offered viewers a diverse, complex plot with multiple conflicts, ranging from Demilade-Enitan forbidden office domance, to the Demilade-Becky angle, to Derin- secret love affair, to the annoying Timi obsession with Enitan, even in the face of an ailing father.
These all offered to us the opportunity of going through a rivetting tvshow with non-stop cliffhangers, mischief, scandals and suspense. However, to our dismay, barely 20 episodes into the show and we have conclusions to even the most complex of the conflicts. Enitan is now in the know, Dame Doregos is aware of what she should be aware of, and has handled it as expected, Mr Doregos himself is no longer in the dark about anything, we had always known Mr Braithwaite was not one for long the show.
Now we are left with disappointment, it’s an anticlimatic feeling right in the middle of the show, and we are left to wonder what may be done to remedy this abhorrent state of affairs.
Where perhaps the show could have milked audience and viewer appeals and ratings was with the Jide Rambo angle, which they mismanaged totally. Jide rambo's antics and escapades kept the show going to some point, then the producers lost it, and decided to focus on a love angle that honestly was always going to annoy viewers. Is it even a love angle, or a stupid obsession no one is interested in? How about the sudden conclusion to the Madu angle? That also could have dragged on a little bit, no? That angle seemed to really get viewers interested, but alas, it's concluded, albeit in disappointing fashion.
What we are left with going forward is nothing out of the ordinary, with Becky and her supposed Husband dead, Derin's baby daddy dead, the baby taken care of, 3 of the initial conflict situations are resolved, with the much expected but heralded demise of Mr Braithwaite, another resolution is made to an already quickly concluding theme plot.
Now, while the show seemed to have opened a new conflict with the seemingly secret “secret” relationship between the Doregos Household and the Olanipekuns, we may be inclined to call it early. If we are not surprised, we may have a conclusion in favour of Enitan as a Doregos, which in our opinion is cliché, mainstream and a little too Predictable.
If on the other hand we have a real conflict between the Doregos and the Olanipekuns, then we still won’t be surprised, as it will now result in whether love can stand the test of family feud. Romeo and Juliet? Colour me surprised.
In our well considered judgement of the show so far, we feel this was a show that had everything to be a gold mine, but mismanagement may be depriving us of what we deserve, no?
The conflicts are being resolved a little too quickly, perhaps a leaf from the Battleground book of ideas will do the creators good? We beg to think so.
A show executive produced by Opeyemi Odugbemi, and Directed by the Legendary Victor Sanchez Aghahowa, and Tope Oshin, I am still interested and my fingers are crossed. This can be salvaged yet.
It’s first episodes are a solid watch, and will recommend this to fans of Nollywood. You may love it more than I do.
