DELHI CRIME

Delhi Crime: Perfect Score From Netflix!!

Based on a Delhi gang rape case, this crime drama follows the Delhi Police investigation into the finding of the men who perpetrated the crime.
This show has to be one of the most surprising entries in Netflix's array of shows. It was snuck in under the rader and boy did it deliver on everything, ranging from incredible narrative, brilliant storytelling and premium acting. This is one show that everyone has to see, for its content, message, Creative storytelling and Genius acting. The script writing team delivered an incredible piece worthy of concept and/ or plot theme element of the show. Viewers could hardly ask for any more from a tv show.
That being said, let's take a look at what makes this show tick!
Already, the concept upon which the show is premised is astonishing, never mind the repetitive nature of it. It's a gang rape case, it's probably something you may have seen on numerous episodes of some procedural shows, but none quite captured in depth, not only the gruesome nature of the crime, but go on to capture the bone chilling consequences in the aftermath, both on the victim and the police force. The show further details the investigation procedure, while taking into account the difficulties faced by the police force that was ill equipped to handle such a rigorous task, and all in between weaving a political plot twist into the fabric of the show to keep the show moving at a hysterical pace.
So for concept ,it's a solid 9/10 for encompassing everything that most procedural shows fail to detail.

What is a brilliant concept without a genius story teller? As we have mentioned severally in our reviews, it is possible to have a good concept for a show, and the show fails to deliver, due largely to failures in weaving an incredible narrative. That is something that Netflix and Ritchie Mehta have achieved in aces. From the series premiere it was bone chilling narrative, and we could immediately see that the show was going to be a hell of a roller coaster. The decision by Netflix to not give a visual account of the crime to the viewing audience made the crime all the more gruesome, heinous and despicable. The eye witness/ victim account of the crime would make viewers cringe, it definitely made me squirm any time I had to watch the victims recount the ordeal. But what could be worse that the victim account of it? It's the heartless, astonishing and cold blooded confession of the principal accused that had viewers bloods churning with rage, pity and anguish, anguish at the thought that no matter how the investigation went, the female victim was never going to ever be the same again, that is if she was even lucky enough to survive the ordeal.

Perhaps, Netflix deciding to not visualise the actual crime was meant to make the show look as real and relatable as can be possible, and quite frankly they must have overdone it this time around, because I just cannot seem to be able to get the imagery( as painted by oral accounts ) out of my head. Perhaps if it was given visual representation, it would have been 'seen' and forgotten in a few more episodes. Being unable to see the actual crime also ties into real life occurrences because most crimes are never witnessed, and all that the police, the press and relatives of the victims have to go by are oral accounts of the event by the victims.
The conflict as created is quite simple ,but resolving said conflict was what made the show so compelling. It was a superfluous procedure that the viewing audience had to follow and we enjoyed every aspect of it. Even though you may be inclined to argue that the conflict does not really have depth, you should quickly be made to realise that most violent crimes in the real world are just mere acts of a deranged mind, nothing built up, and consequently most lack the depth we require when we watch TV shows or movies. This also made this show quite relatable in that the perpetrators had absolutely no reason for doing what they did, and the unapologetic confession of Jai Singh is quite maddening!
The cast as usual were brilliant on screen. The emotion put into every word spoken conveyed the deep seethed anger, sorrow and anguish felt by all involved, ranging from the victims to their families and the police as well as the media and the nation at large. Netflix dug deep in Indian waters again and have emerged with another gem of a show, boasting of a solid cast and brilliant acting. Shefali Shah( Vartika Chaturvedi) was incredible at her job, both as an actor and as a police officer. It was her initial reaction to the crime that drove the sheer brutality of the crime home to viewers. Netflix spent little to no time in building her up as a strict, hard and by the book police DCP, who could maintain a stone face in the face of almost anything. Her reaction on seeing the victim, that scene broke the Internet, period!

Mridul Sharma( Jai Singh) was brilliant on screen, in fact so brilliant I started painting every rapist in his image in my mind. To mention the rest of the cast and make an appraisal of all will be tantamount to writing more than we originally bargained for, and thus we will rate the show a solid 8.9/10 for incredible acting.
In all, our verdict about this show is that it is one that you just cannot afford to miss. It's positive in enlightenment, it's a storytelling masterclass on its own, and an acting exhibition for all to see. If you have the stomach to watch through 7 bone chilling and gut wrenching episodes of sordid details of a gruesome and heinous act of madness, you will not be disappointed by the brilliance of this show. We will go out on a ledge and call this the best Netflix show to have aired in 2019 yet, and it's quite easy to see why. Casting is spot on, story/ concept is great, storytelling is a product of creative genius and the narrative is as close to reality as there ever was in any given show. Kudos to Netflix and Ritchie Mehta.
