Marvel's Runaways S. 2: Hulu Delivers Big Time!!!
There is a stage in the lives of teenagers where they believe their parents are evil, but is that actually true? That's the situation six Los Angeles teenagers find themselves in when they stumble upon a terrible secret and realize that their parents have been lying to them for their entire lives. The offspring begin an investigation to try to figure out what their guardians are after, while the adults wonder if their kids are hiding secrets of their own. The unlikely crew of teens bands together led by de facto leader and primary strategist Alex Wilder to stop their parents before it is too late.
Season 2 kicked off right where the first ended, with the kids on the run from their parents and from the law; having been implicated in the murder of a runaway. This show is not your ordinary run-of-the-mill marvel show, and Hulu absolutely made a meal of this one. The show catered for both the young and adult audience with its mix of creativity and comic adaptation.
The show definitely improved in the second season over the first, for obvious reasons. The conflict in the 2nd season improved considerably, due to a massive developmental upgrade from that of the first. Moreover, the conflict that was simple and one directional in the first season suddenly got amped and diversified with the introduction of new foes and a more complex and immersive plot.
Asides the acting, which we must say has been astonishing from the 1st season, the high score of the second season can also be put down to the organisation of the season, it's regular pacing and the presentation of events. The scripting team did a good number, and we are very thrilled with the results. The show was able to deliver by keeping the viewers intrigued and interested till the very last episode.
The plot development of the second season moved in tandem with the characters' development. We liked the fact that it was the conflict that developed around the characters, rather than having the characters develop around a conflict. This way provides a more immersive experience. The story rather changed a little with the second season as they now had to live their lives as runaways, the thrills and frills that come with it, and the occasional conflicts that besiege such arrangements. It became a story of love, friendship, familial ties, loyalty and betrayal, and all these can only mean that the conflicts that follow such were more relatable and interesting to watch.
The conflicts with the parents was dialed up a notch, even though some times it was a little too incredulous to believe, especially with the Wilder family and the Minoru family, but all the same it set the season on a ridiculously brilliant journey of storytelling. Even Netflix could not have told a more brilliant story. The mix of old returning characters with newer and more impactful characters threw a whole new glow on the show. The introduction of Ajiona Alexus (Livvie) and Miles Bullock( AWOL) brought something new to the table and offered up different takes on the already existing conflicts. It further meant that we had the opportunity of exploring a whole new ranges of emotions, including love, hate, fear and heartbreak. This is a season that packed everything into a single punch without overburdening the script or suffering the problem of over elaboration.
Rhenzy Feliz( Alex Wilder), Lyrica Okano( Nico Minoru) and Ariela Barer (Gert Yorkes) have to be the standout performers amongst the kids. Their acting has improved considerably and being thrust into a season where they had to explore wave after wave of emotional change meant they had to be up to the task, and my goodness did they step up big.
Eva Carradine, Angel Parker Ryan Sands and James Marsters performed admirably well, especially Angel Parker who was able to maintain her stoicism throughout the whole show without faltering, and for Carradine who tuned into her performance from the 1st season without fault.
If you thought the first 7 episodes of the season are incredible, wait till you see the end scenes of the season finale. Surely you won't be as patient as I am in waiting for the 3rd season.
