Aquaman is about a super hero who happens to be a half breed his mother is from Atlantis and his father is from earth, the movie focuses on his life and struggles, and all that he goes through before he became the one true king of Atlantis.
So having seen what the plot of the movie is, let's get down to what made me rate this movie quite highly.
It's been a rough couple of years for DC and it was a breathe of fresh air after I saw aquaman.
Let's start with the positives before we look at the negatives.
The plot of the movie, simply put it was simple and straight forward which happens to be a good thing in this case, DC has always had this issue of trying to overelaborate the plot of their movies and thus making a mess of things, in aquaman it was a simple plot and thus it was easy for the story to develop and climax. I hope they continue with this pattern in the next release that will be shazam but remebering it's DC I won't hold my breathe.
Another thing that they got spot on was the casting, it was perfect everyone got the role that suited them starting from Jason mamoa who played the role of Arthur down to the simplest guard in the movie, I can't imagine another actor playing the role of aquaman, it just felt like a match made in heaven and I hope he remains in the role for a long while.
And yes effective and good use of CGI. Wow did I just say that, I honestly can't believe I just did and you won't blame me especially after all the gaffes and mess that DC has made all through the years when it came to their use of cgi, we can never forget the moustache of Henry cavill in justice league, the villian in justice league or the villian in Wonder Woman, I could go on and on but you yet the point by now. It was a welcome relief watching cgi being put to great effect and it was pleasing to the eyes.
A villian that is not an alien like how hard can it be, the villian is just another regular human, we are tired of the cgi villian and so I was thrilled seeing king orm as the villian and he was quite okay for the role, DC can take a cue from this and really go forward with this, enough with all the extra terestial villians.
And yes if you are a DC fanboy you will appreciate the theme,tone and sound of this movie, it was colourful, fun, carefree and just nice to the eyes, DC have always been known for their movie theme and tone to be dark which was a hobby of former director Zack Snyder and so it was quite refreshing seeing this movie and noticing the distinct difference in the theme of this movie from past DC movies.
There is not much negatives to talk about except for the fact that the movie did not really start till like after 35 minutes, their effect of trying to show Arthur growing up with just one scene in the aquarium was really a let down, it felt rushed and not exactly well thought out and was out of place ,it would have been given a little bit of more flesh than just that one scene.
All in all the movie had way more positives than negatives. I went to the cinema with alot of doubt having been scarred alot by my favourite franchise and I came out feeling better like really looking at where the dceu goes on from here.
So just to answer a few questions
Is aquaman my movie of the year? No it is not
Is aquaman the best DC movie ever ? No
Is aquaman a good movie? Yes it is
Is it a fresh start for DC? I hope so.
