GODZILLA (2018)
Godzilla: Monster Planet
The human race takes to the stars and abandons Earth after Godzilla wreaks havoc upon the planet. Thousands of years later, they return from space to destroy the giant monster and reclaim their home. It's a race against time in this animated Hit as the human race step up their efforts to reclaim earth from the king of Monsters, Godzilla. With new weapons, new tactics and an overwhelming desire to return home, Commander Sakaki leads an elite fearless team to go toe to toe with the King,; what will be the fate of earth when primal Force meets unyielding human desire?
The concept of the first Netflix franchise is brilliantly conceived. We appreciated the dose of reality the viewers are fed, the presentation of Godzilla as a force that conquered the entire human race and a few helping hands( alien life forms), truly got us interested. The attention to the destructive Force of Godzilla was not overly flogged by irrelevant references to it, rather it was effectively captured by the depiction of the human desire to return home, to terra, to earth, but ultimately kept in Space due to primal fear, unfettered unadulterated fear of Godzilla.
Having talked about the general plot/ theme and the conflict element, its high time to shift focus to story telling. The story telling is good if not downright awesome, due in no small part to the Japanese influence. The storytelling took on a narrative course in the opening sequences and this narrative was an instrument used to achieve a goal or set goals; one to introduce the conflict and to present the overwhelming power of Godzilla. We must admit that the technique achieved it's goals in spectacular fashion, leaving viewers with an overwhelming sense of impending doom.
The conflicts element itself was straight forward, however the conflict resolution took on complex dimensions. We particularly liked attention paid to tactical aspect of the battle against Godzilla. It showed (as pointed out in the critic of Jurassic World) that there needed to be an exceptional presentation of the story or the conflict. It couldn't have just been about overwhelming Godzilla with brute Force, since it had already succeeded in subduing an entire civilization in the past, what more could a group of elite soldiers achieve with brute force? Nothing!
Human desire, greed and technological advancements also played an important role in the movie, being the cause of the conflict( Godzilla) and being the only remedy to the situation.
The animation is brilliant, the 3d CGI effects were astonishing, and we could see the Japanese anime impact once again rearing it's head, but it's a beautiful head we must admit. The fight scenes are amazing and reminiscent of animated fight scenes, the weaponry effects were Resident evilesque. One area we did however noticed calls for improvement is the movement of characters. The CGI effects being standard does not absolve Netflix from their obligations to ensure that the characters had smooth motor motion, we felt that their motion was a little delayed, as with most CGI that have not gone through refining.
The conflict resolution and the ending of the movie had to have been the best I have seen in an animated movie in a very long while. The defeat of Godzilla( perceived ) was presented in astonishing fashion with yet more astounding effects, the situation presented and the heightened situational responses from characters, most especially Sakaki were just brilliant! And the concluding scenes were heartbreaking as ever a movie could deliver, the utter helplessness and feeling of utter dejection in the face of defeat gave viewers a sense of fulfilment. Most viewers didn't feel at all satisfied that Godzilla, the king could lose in such fashion at the first attempt, and they ultimately got their wish.
In all, it's a great movie, for demanding audiences. Superb action sequences, regular dialogues and amazing CGI. There is no way that this does not fall amongst my top most recommended animated movies for 2018.
