AN ORIGIN STORY OR JUST ANOTHER FAILED FRANCHISE REVIVAL

Tomb Raider: Origins of an Heir?

Tomb Raider explores the origins and beginnings of acclaimed Lara Croft, the Raider of Tombs. It follows the not-so-humble beginnings of Lara Croft, growing up in the streets, how did Lara Croft become the great adventurer that the world has come to know. Lara played by the Athletic and Sexy Alicia Vikander, is drawn into the world of adventuring after her adventurer father goes missing on a mission. Years after, Lara is now an adult and she is stubbornly convinced that her dad is still alive somewhere and she goes on an expedition to the last place he was known to have ventured for; a seemingly desolate deathtrap of an island, a place where even the locals fear to venture...

Casting Alicia Vikander would seem like the stuff good movies are made of right? But it so happened that it became the achilles heel of the movie. Alicia Vikander as good as she is never got into the Lara Croft character. Regardless of the fact that it's an origin story, we think that perhaps she was too much of baby?( she groans and sobs at every opportunity).
One aspects the movie didn't fail to deliver on is action sequence. Perhaps that's the one aspect of Lara Croft that they got right? Jolie is a hard hitting fast paced action character and Vikander nearly almost got that aspect spot on, however the bad omen came with character dialogues; the conversations were never up to par, it was something you would expect of a nollywood production, majority of the lines were just cliché.
The plot, the story and the delivery and/ or execution all seemed like they were rushed. From the very opening scene of the movie, we saw that Lara was stubborn, and she was failing at what she was stubborningly trying to do; "combat" , barely some five (5) or six (6) weeks later, and we see her kicking the asses of armed mercenaries? Hey where did she get Marine - like training?  Was there a time skip we know nothing about?
Did somebody see where she jumped over a collapsing chasm? Come on, how long did it take Jolie's Croft to do that? Two installments?  Yes that's right, two. Moreover, did I question how over the years she may have accepted that her dad was not coming back, and when she was suddenly ready to let go, she decided to grab on tighter?
Perhaps, the writer was trying to bamboozle us by giving us a rushed sequence of action scenes to make us let go of the obvious plot holes?
      Plain failed, we noticed.
While Overall I wont be too hard on the performance of the movie ( it is always hard to revive a blockbuster franchise), I must say that Vikander has every Potential to succeed Jolie as Croft. A better writer and a better director will bring everything into perspective.
I refuse to point it out that the movie seemed to revolve around just three characters,  Vikander, Wu and Goggins.
For the adrenaline junkie, the action connoisseur, this is for you. Watch it and you won't be bored, it's from one action scene to the next, except for the father daughter reunion!? Ultimately, it's okay for an origin story, but it leaves a whole lot to be desired.

Watch it if u are a fan of the franchise or maybe just if you desperately need some adrenaline pumping action.

  1. I was shocked at her improvement in martial arts and god knows I have never been a fan of flash back in movie worst of all in an origin movie since its an origin movie run at your pace no need to read rush, no need for a flash back in an origin movie the flash back should be part of the movie atleast , I thought directors should have taken a cue from wolverine origin which is still one of the origin stories I have seen. I would rate it a 6

  2. Production and direction just smelled of rush rush. But for the action junkies, yeah, they'd love it
